Premiership interest in Westwood as negotiations begin

Coventry City chairman has begun negotiations with the agent of Keiren Westwood amid renewed interest from at least two Premiership clubs.

The 25 year old Westwood asked earlier this year about the chances of extending his contract with the Sky Blue and spoke about how happy he is with Coventry and that he would like to stay for the foreseeable future.

City chairman Ray Ranson has offered the Irish international goal keeper an improved contract, but the terms he can offer Westwood are no where near what he could get if he moved to a Premiership club.

Essentially the deal revolves around whether Westwood will be happy to stay at Coventry with the improved terms and be the number one 'keeper getting regular games, or if he would prefer to more money as an understudy and a near permanent place on the bench, which might harm his international future.

Mr Ranson confirmed he had held talks with Westwood and his agent, saying,  “I had a very positive meeting with Keiren at the training ground on Tuesday and then met his agent in Cheshire in the afternoon and that meeting was very positive as well.”

As for the player himself, he was non committal, saying, “The chairman has spoken to my agent but I don’t deal with that sort of stuff and it is not something I want to get involved with. I think that’s why people have agents so they don’t have to get involved in all the politics of it."

“After the first year the chairman was talking about giving new contracts out and it didn’t materialise. They said it about Scotty Dann and Foxy and they have gone now so we will see what happens.”

Westwood then went on to speak about the strange season Coventry have just finished. He said, “Progression is the word we use every year and we look like we have gone back but I don’t think we have."

I think we are in a false position and that good run we went on showed what a good team we are and we don’t deserve to finish 19th, but we deserved to get battered by Watford in the last game because they played really well and we were awful.”

Even if Westwood does sign an improved contract that keeps him at Coventry , Mr Ranson doesn't think he will stay until the end of the term, but at least the club will be able to command a substantial fee for the highly rated and talented goal keeper
