Former Coventry City youngster David Pipe is making the most of his life.

Pipe, who made his City debut aged 17 and has a cap for Wales, had been sent down for 38 months for an incident in Bristol in June 2010, but after being released, he was given a chance by Newport County and will be leading them at Wembley in Saturday's FA Trophy Final.

Speaking to Wales On Sunday's Tim Lewis, Pipe said: “After the things I have been through – all because of my own doing – I’m very proud.

“Even though it was a negative in my life I’ve used it as a positive.

“Mental strength got me through it and I’m probably looking forward to every game a lot more than anyone else.

“I enjoy coming in to work and because of my past everything that didn’t really matter before does now.

“I don’t like using the phrase dream come true, but I’ve been a professional for 13 years now and never had the chance to go to Wembley.

“I’m going to grasp it with both hands."
