FA Cup winning manager John Sillett has said Coventry City ought to think about appointing his former club captain, Trevor Peake as their new manager.

Sillett also revealed that he tried to persuade the board to appoint Peake and Cyrille Regis as his replacements when he and George Curtis stood down as City bosses.

Sillett said, "I think they need someone who has got their heart and soul in Coventry City. Someone like Trevor Peake, who was very popular with the fans, who has got the knowledge at grass roots level and been coaching at reserve and academy level for a long time, and who would have the enthusiasm to come in."

"I hear people say there is no passion in the game these days and they need someone who when he walks into the dressing room all eyes are glued to and wondering who's in trouble or what's he going to say next."

"When you look at the managers available there are a lot who have had big pay-offs and had a degree of success or failure, but we don't want someone who has been a failure somewhere else."

Sillett then went on to reveal how he spoke to the board about his ideas about who should replace him as City boss.

"Before I left the club I had made noises about Cyrille and Peakey taking over," he said. "I was going to stay on for another couple of years to oversee it because I wanted to keep that Sky Blue blood in the club, but unfortunately the directors didn't adhere to it.

"Cyrille demands respect and Trevor is a lot stronger than people think, was defensively brilliant and a great character."

Trevor Peake is currently on the Leicester City academy staff. He did take charge of one Coventry City first team game, alongside Steve Ogrizovic, after Roland Nielson was sacked. The pair were reserves and youth coaches at the time. City lost that game 1-0 at Burnley

The 53-year-old former defender is currently employed on Leicester City's academy coaching staff as U16's manager, having previously coached Coventry's reserves and youth sides and took charge of the first team as caretaker boss alongside Steve Ogrizovic for one game - a 1-0 defeat at Burnley - in 2002 when Roland Nilsson was sacked.
