Nuneaton v Coventry City: Text Commentary

14th July From Triton Showers Community Arena, Liberty Way, Nuneaton, Kick off 7:30 pm

Coventry City team:

Kevin Ellegaard (trialist goal keeper) Keogh, O'Halleran, Grandison, Wood,Doyle,  Baker, Clingan, McIndoe, Smeekes, McSheffrey.

Subs: Quirke, Hussey, Jeffers, Wilson, Turner. ++++

Thunder and lightning at Nuneaton. Kick off has been delayed due to crowds!

The game finally kicks off in pouring rain, about fifteen minutes late and Coventry go straight onto the offensive.

New boy Richard Keogh sets off on a good run, but is stopped by a Nuneaton defender.

In the 3rd minute Smeekes shoots across the goal and forces Acton in the Nuneaton goal to make a good save.

Carl Baker, wearing a bandage around his head, protecting the injury sustained last Saturday in Austria, is playing on the left of midfield and is working well with Sammy Clingan who is patrolling the centre of the midfield.

The 27 year old Danish trialist goal keeper Kevin Ellegaard is exciting some interest from the female fans among the City support.

13 minutes into the game and the rain has now stopped and there is some sunshine and Orlando Smeekes has another shot, but it goes just wide.

16 minutes. Acton splls the ball, but McSheffrey can't follow up. Ex Coventry player Adam Walker doing well for a Nuneaton side whose best chance has been a Rob Oddy crossin the 19th minute.

24 minutes gone and Nuneaton get a free kick which is saved by Ellegaard. The ball is quickly played out of the City defence to the other end where McIndoe has a shot blocked.

26 minutes. Smeekes sets up McSheffrey on the left, but Acton manages to palm down the shot.

30 minutes. Nuneaton win a corner, Ellegaard punches clear, but is impeded and wins a free kick.

Half an hour gone and the score is 0-0.

31 minute. Clingan wins a free kick which McSheffrey fired well over the bar.

34 minutes. Coventry win a corner which leads to another in quick succesion, but  the second is cleared by the Nuneaton defence.

O'Halloran is doing OK at left back, but on the whole the Coventry City passing is ropey.

Half time score 0-0

Second half is underway and no changes have been made yet. The Coventry City fans are enjoying a bit of banter with the Nuneaton goal keeper Acton because he wearing pink.

53rd minute. Gary McSheffrey has a shot from just eight yards out that squirmed under Acton, but was cleared off the line for a wasted corner.

56 minutes.

Baker wins a corner which Clingan takes and finds Carl Baker whose shot is blocked and the ball goes out for another corner. Smeekes gets in a header, but it goes across the face of the goal.

61 minutes. Boothroyd changes the entire team except for Smeekes and Ellegaard.

74 minutes.Smeekes is poleaxed by Dean, but nothing is given.

77 minutes.Jeffers wins a corner. Jordan Clarke has his shot deflected wide for another City corner.

79th minute. Corner taken, this time it is a good one by Hussey, Smeekes has a shot which is cleared by Dean.

Many Coventry City fans are leaving early.

83rd minute. A shot from Jeffers from 18 yardsout is saved by Acton to huge,ironic cheers from the City fans who are demanding a goal.

85 minute. City win a free kick which is taken by Smeekes, but he sends it well wide.

An individual wearing a whte baseball cap and boxer shorts invades the pitch. He evades the stewards before giving himself up and gets rewarded with a chant of 'sign him up'.

88 minutes. City win another corner, the ball gets ot Nathan Cameron whop fires the ball over the bar. 

89 minutes gone and the City fans are demanding movement from the players. Jeffers hits a deep cross  way too far, missing everyone.

Final whistle blows to end the game.
