It appears that plans for Premier League U21 sides to enter the Johnstones Paint Trophy competition have been quietly shelved.
There had been plans for the JPT to be run in groups rather than a knockout competition with one PL U21 team in each group.
However, a Football League spokesman told The Cumberland News: “There are currently no ongoing discussions with clubs regarding Under-21 sides taking part in this competition.”
The spokesman added: “The League is continuing its discussions with the Football Association and the Premier League about how it can continue making a significant contribution to the development of young footballers for the England national team.”
