No Big Spend For Coleman

Coventry City manager Chris Coleman has said that he will not be splashing out the cash on just any player and will be going for quality players whom he thinks will be investments for the future.

Said Coleman to the CT: "It is the easiest thing in the world to sign a cheque for £2 million but you have to make sure you get it right because in our league it can be disastrous if you don't.

"As a manager you have to understand the business side of things. "You can't just knock on the chairman's door and say 'I have seen a player who will cost us three million quid.

"He's 20 and he's going to score 20 goals and thin two years we'll sell him for £10 million, by which time we will be 10 places higher.'

"If you could guarantee that, then that's good business - but it doesn't often happen like that.

"The Premier League is the biggest and most expensive in the world and the Championship is the fourth most watched, so we are definitely in the right place to play football - but we have still got to be careful because it is scary to see what has happened to other clubs.

"Look at Charlton, Southampton and Norwich - if it can happen to them it can happen to anyone, so going slowly is better than gambling.

"If you gamble and it comes off, great - but if it doesn't come off then the consequences can be massive.

"Our targets haven't changed. It is hard for the players we have got because they hear me saying that there are going to be changes in the summer and that puts a bit of pressure on them.

"But I would rather it be out in the open so that they know what we are trying to do.

"As I said on day one I have signed a long contract because I knew it will take a long time to get players out and my own players in."
