New faces in time for Portugal trip

The Coventry City squad will reassemble on Friday for the start of their pre-season training to prepare for their training camp in Portugal next week.

Andy Thorn is hoping that he will have new faces in the squad to take to Portugal, both goalkeepers, Chris Dunn and Joe Murphy.

Both of the goal keepers are available on free transfers, although a development fee will be payable to Northampton Town for Dunn because of his age.

Andy Thorn and Steve Harrison will put the players through two days of intensive fitness training and tests on Friday and Saturday to check on whether they have looked after themselves during their summer break and in preparation for what promises to be a tough week long training camp in Portugal.

Thorn is hoping to be taking a 22 man squad to Portugal and  he wants the two new players to be included.

He said, “We are looking forward to getting the boys back. We are taking 22 out and that will hopefully include three goalkeepers, including Lee Burge. Danny Ireland is still injured at the moment and won’t be fit to start the season, so he’ll be staying behind with some of the younger boys who will then hook up with us when we get back."

Three big players who spent some of last season injured are all fully recovered and will be in the 22 man squad. Ben Turner, James McPake and Gary McSheffrey are all fully recovered and will be back in full training in preparation for the new season.

Thorn said, “Ben, James and Gary are all fit for pre-season which is good news and hopefully all the boys will come back in good shape after following their individual programmes over the summer."

“They will all be weighed and have fat tests and hopefully we will hit the ground running because we don’t want to be wasting time getting people’s weight down.

“Callum Wilson will also be staying behind for on-going treatment because he was nursing a knock at the end of last season, so we will ease him back in.”

Another piece of good news for the long suffering City fans is that the Academy player Conor Thomas, whose loan and proposed transfer to Liverpool last season sparked a boardroom row, will also be included in the 22 man squad.

The teenager had to return to Coventry when he injured his hamstring while at Liverpool and the deal fell through, but he is now back at Coventry full time and could be a regular first team player for the Sky Blues in the coming season.
