Mowbray in Striker Search

Coventry City manager Tony Mowbray is on the hunt for strikers.

Speaking to the Coventry Telegraph's Andy Turner about ensuring there is some decent fire power in the side which has been severely lacking this season, Mowbray said: “I sat and watched Callum on the TV recently and Callum Wilson in this team, with the domination of the ball we have, we’d just keep scoring goals.

We go back to the bigger picture which is recruitment. I know I’ve been banging on about it for the last two months now but we have to find the next one. At this moment it’s very evident to me that he’s not at the football club right now.

“But we have to look, we have to find and have people on the ground watching to find the player to score goals for us. So if this club wants to be at the top end of the table next year it needs to have 20-goal-a season strikers – two of them.

“They are probably going to come from an Under-21 team in the Premier League.

“We are building relationships and trying to develop links and the certain clubs I talk to I feel there are one or two players on my list that we’ve watched that I feel could probably come and score 20-odd goals but their clubs aren’t really sure at this moment what they’re going to do with them and they are going to have discussions.

“But they like what we have done with some players we have had this season and I would hope we could find those players who are fast, direct, alert and score goals; players that are hungry to build their careers and we give them a platform to go and do it and express their talent.

“They might have scored 30 goals in their Under-21 team but they have to go and play against men every week in a physical league where teams are sometimes better without the ball than they are with it – better at stopping you.

“We need people who want to come and test themselves.”
