Mowbray - Words Are Cheap, We Have To Do It On The Grass

Coventry City manager Tony Mowbray has said that his side need to starting putting wins on the pitch after losing 2-1 at home to Scunthorpe United.

“We talked last week about a poor result and a poor performance and said we needed more, but words are cheap – we’ve got to do it on the grass," said Mowbray to the Coventry Telegraph's Andy Turner.

“Nobody can feel sorry for themselves. This is professional sport and nobody’s giving you anything; you’ve got to go and grab it yourself and you’ve either got it in your belly to be a competitor, to want to fight and win and come out on top, or you haven’t.

“The team have to react. You feel that they’re ready when the bell goes and yet I didn’t see it first half – we need to show a lot more than that.

“On that first-half display we probably didn’t deserve anything and I can’t find words or excuses for that.

“The second half was a bit better – the keeper made a great save from Adam Armstrong and we had a lot of little things around their box but it wasn’t to be and it was too little too late at the end.

“We’ve lacked a little bit of consistency of selection because of injuries and suspensions which doesn’t help but that comes across as an excuse and we don’t want to do that."

Mowbray added: "Whoever comes in has to perform and play for the shirt so we’re a bit frustrated at the moment – we need something to go our way, find a way to win a football match and push on.

“That’s two defeats to Scunthorpe this year which is obviously not what we want.

“It’s frustrating because if we’d have won today we’d have been three points off automatic again and right back in the mix.

“We’re not the only team at the top end who are struggling to win games at the moment but we need to do it pretty quickly.

“We lost two set-play goals, the type we didn’t lose when we had players like Reda Johnson and Ben Turner in the team, but it’s other sides’ job to find your weaknesses and try to exploit them.”
