Mowbray - We Shot Ourselves In The Foot

Coventry City manager Tony Mowbray has said that the City players have shot themselves in the foot by going down to defeat.

All City had to do was to get a point against Crewe Alexandra but they were beaten 3-1 and speaking to the Coventry Telegraph's Alan Poole, Mowbray said:  “Our recent home performances had given us the confidence and the belief that we could get a result but this was always a dangerous game for us and we shot ourselves in the foot.

“I don’t think they were great created goals but some traits we haven’t seen recently resurfaced.

“It was educational for me because games like this expose the frailties of certain individuals. It asks questions and it was quite raw to see the ones who wanted to play and do what we do and the ones who find it difficult on that pitch.

“We shouldn’t be surprised because of our home results this season but I genuinely believed we were ready to push on.

“I expected us to produce a positive performance and get a good result but at home sometimes you have to be that little bit braver. I think that some of the players find it more difficult at home, probably because of the expectation.

“You can look too deep into football sometimes and whenever you don’t get the right result everybody’s got the answer for you.

“But this was the same team we’ve had for a few weeks. We went to Bristol the other week and played exceptionally well with the same set-up and the same team apart from one injured full-back.

“At half-time I thought we could go on and get something from the game – we just needed to get the next goal and then they would have felt the immense pressure but it didn’t happen, it didn’t come. At 3-0 it’s game over, even though we did get one back.”

“But we are where we are and we’ve got to prepare next week for a huge game. Our away record is good but Crawley know they need to win it as well.

“You can only picture how the game is going to go. If we score first it will be The Alamo from them, they’re going to push everybody on like we tend to do at home.

“It would have been nice to have the final week with no tension but it’s professional football – we’re in this job to deal with pressure and we’ve got to play for the football club.

“It’s going to be a big occasion and we’ve got to be resolute try to do the job.”
