Coventry City striker Gary McSheffrey has been given a vote of confidence by his manager Mark Robins and has a major role to play for the club, but fans have yet to see the best of the Coventry born striker this season.

McSheffrey has been under fire, under performing and under pressure from the City fans this season, but after being dropped for a few games, Robins recalled him for the game at Leighton Orient last weekend.

McSheffrey didn’t score in the 1-0 away win and even missed a couple of good chances, but his performance impressed Robins.

Robins said to the CT's Alan Poole, "We saw Gary McSheffrey looking sharp, looking as if he’s going to score, and for me that’s a big step forward because what a waste if he’s not.

"He played at the top level with Birmingham but since he came back to Coventry I think he probably hasn’t done himself justice. He’s under-achieved in terms of his performance levels, but he’s only 30 so he’s certainly not over the hill, miles from that.

"He’s a good player, technically, which is why he’s played at the level he has, but you never stop learning and he’s been doing some specific work that will help make him better, physically and technically.

"I saw a better Gary McSheffrey on Saturday than I have for a while because he’s starting to get that sharpness. At the top of his game he’s somebody who can help fire us up the league and he wants to do that because he’s a Coventry lad who loves the club and loves the fans.

"Gary’s got more to his game than I had. I was an out-and-out goal-scorer, that’s all I lived for, but Gary is very versatile. He can play up front, or in the hole on the left of midfield. He can be a key player for us so we want him firing on all cylinders."
