Making Football Supporters Pay

With the credit crunch in full flow, it is a worrying time for Working Mens Clubs up and down the country.

Coventry witnessed the closure of the oldest club in the country - The Coventry Working Mens Club last month, so you think the clubs in Coventry would be looking after their members.

However, the Hen Lane Social & District Club, is currently showing little regard for its members who wish to use the club on a home match day by charging them to park at their club in Beacon Road,Holbrooks.

Many members, who had to go through a rigmorole even to join the club and whom, only use the club when visiting the Ricoh Arena or for meetings due to not residing in the city, turned up for Coventry City's game against Southampton, expecting that their membership included parking.

They arrived to be told by a youth with no visable means of identication that they now had to pay £4 to park there, although £2 of which was redeemable when a drink was purchased.

It is understood that this fee only applies to football supporters and not other sections of the club including the snooker teams.

Some City supporters have now already gone elsewhere, due to the rules changing virtually every game and others are expected to follow, if a meeting between the new steward and its members proves less than favourable.
