Scottish Under-21 international Kerr signed professional forms at St James' Park in September 2000, but his appearances have been limited because of a serious shoulder injury.
The 21-year-old has made just one first-team appearance, as substitute, for the Magpies this season, but could now feature in the Sky Blues squad for the Midlands derby game against Walsall this weekend.
