Former Coventry City forward Leon McKenzie has been sent to prison for six months.

McKenzie, who appeared for Kettering Town against City last week. has been jailed after admitting that he sent bogus letters to Northamptonshire police in an attempt to avoid a speeding conviction.

He had admitted to six charges of perverting the course of justice at an earlier hearing after sending letters from a fictional garage in London, claiming that his car was off the road to Northamptonshire Police in 2008 and 2009.

The retired player, who is now embarking on a singing career, was also handed an eighteen month driving ban at Northampton Crown Court by Judge Richard Bray who is reported by The Guardian as saying: "A custodial sentence is necessary for this type of offence which strikes right at the heart of justice.

"It would completely send out the wrong message if I did not hand out a custodial sentence."
