Coventry City forward Leon McKenzie is hoping to have the support of all City supporters as he makes a comeback from injury.

The former Norwich City striker is now back running against after a ruptured Achilies tendon did consider quitting after picking up the injury in the win against Birmingham City back in February.

"I just hope I get the fans' full support," said McKenzie to the CT's Andy Turner. "If I am honest, when I went down I heard a few jeers, as if people thought I had done it on purpose. And that hurt me.

"My wife and kids were in the stands crying and maybe people don't see that side of things, so that upset me, particularly because I have always given my all when I have played and I know that when my fitness levels are up I can do a good job.

"I really enjoyed the Wolves victory because that was the real me, playing up front and scoring, and hopefully I can play up there a few more times for Coventry and give the fans a few more goals to cheer.

"I know I can easily play in the Championship.

"The manager is looking to bring some new players in and I hope he does because we want to have a better season."

On his injury, McKenzie said: "I ruptured my thigh earlier in the season and got back from that and then within a few months I did my Achilles.

"It was mentally traumatising. I was seriously thinking about retiring. But I had a chat with my family, Chris and a few people and changed my mind.

"I am a fighter and I realised that I still have so much more in me. And I am ready now. When I was fit I really enjoyed my football and feel I was doing well in the side.

"Although I am always confident in my ability, unfortunately I have had a lot of bad luck with injuries. "But I am confident I won't get any more serious injuries.

"You can never be sure you won't get the odd niggle because I have been out a long time, but I am hoping to be fit for the start of the season.

"I can't put an exact time frame on it but the lads are back on July 1 and I aim to join in with then towards the end of the month and definitely get a pre-season game or two in that time.

"I have just turned 31 but I feel I can still do a great job at Coventry and hopefully I will sit down with the chairman soon and sign for another year, and I look forward to getting back to my best and scoring goals and helping to set them up for others."
