Former Coventry City keeper Chris Kirkland's loan move to Cardiff City has fallen through.

Kirkland had been wanted by the South Wales team as cover for the injured David Marshall and current number one Tom Heaton but it is understood that Cardiff could not agree a deal with Wigan Athletic and the keeper is staying at the DW Stadium.

Wigan boss Roberto Martinez is being quoted as saying: "The deal won't be going ahead. Kirkland is staying at Wigan."
