Former Coventry City striker Marlon King could miss the start of the season, which wold mean that he would be unavailable to play against his former side Coventry City in the second League game of the season.

King suffered a knee injury while training with Birmingham City and he may now need surgery to rectify the problem which would keep the 31 year old striker out of action for several months.

King pulled out of pre-season training in Ireland last week and was told to rest, but even if surgery is not required he is unlikely to  be fit enough to take part in the first few games of the new season.

Many Coventry City fans had speculated that King would not play against his former club  and cited injury as the reason why and there will be a mixed reaction to the news.

Birmingham City manager Chris Hughton confirmed king's injury ad said: “What happened is he felt a contact on his knee in Cork last week and we are confident that it is not a long term thing at the moment. The advice we’ve been given is that Marlon needs to rest it for a short period of time.”

If King does miss the start of the season Birmingham will start the new campaign with a striker shortage  as Cameron Jerome and Nikola Zigic are also out with injuries.
