It All Went Very Well

It all went very well was the verdict of representatives of Ricoh Arena staff, a representative of Compass Catering and stewards as Coventry hosted its first two of twelve matches in the London 2012 Olympic Games football tournament.

From catching one of the shuttle buses to getting into the City of Coventry stadium, it was clear that the scare and horror stories portrayed by the media, seemed more aimed at the Olympic Stadium in East London rather than the ground where we watch Coventry City play home matches.

Getting to the ground was easy with shuttle buses from Pool Meadow every five minutes and once at the stadium, it was a case of getting a transparent bag for your belongings and and then a quick pat down before getting into the ground.

Those with corporate or media tickets will face airport style security searches but for anyone on a normal match ticket, getting to your seat was not an unpleasant experience.

There was more people in the stadium to see Japan beat Canada 2-1 than there were for Sweden's 4-1 win over South Africa who scored the goal of the day with an audacious forty yard lob from Modise watched by a crowd given as 18,290.

Getting away after the game was just as easy with plenty of buses back to town and taxis in Tescos Car Park.

Now I feel the city of Coventry and everyone involved in staging the Games in Coventry did a good job on the opening day but what was the official view?.

I spoke to Ricoh Arena's Director Of Facilities Anthony Mundy who was pleased with the way things were going and was delighted that the weather was playing his part.

I also spoke to Mark O'Shea from Compass Catering and a number of stewards and everyone agreed that things were going well and people with many, many more people from outside the city than City supporters, were taking away some very positive experiences away from the day's proceedings.

There are ten more Olympic matches to come and the standard has been set but if everyone plays their part, then there is no reason why the matches held in Coventry in the 2012 Olympic Games Football Tournament cannot be hailed as a success.
