I'm Interested In Learning - Pressley

Coventry City manager Steven Pressley has said that he is still interested in learning about the game.

‘I’m interested in learning. The detail is vital for a modern manager," Pressley who celebrates his 41st birthday today, told the Daily Mail's Jack Gaughan. "There are so many demands - more so than ever before. Players question the manager and you must have the answers, and consistent answers. Consistency of your methods, consistency of tactical details. They are crucial, because the players want to know that you know the answers.

"I wasn’t brought up in a tactical environment - far from it. It was demanding and there were true standards. It’s something I’ve really had to learn moving forward. It’s a new era of coaching - football hasn’t really got to grips with it yet.

"I’ve developed my own strategy that is very consistent. It’s detailed but very simplistic for players to understand - something that’s been very important to me.

"I can deal with disappointments in football but you need a work ethic. You need them buying into the culture. You can accept poor afternoons if they do that. They aren’t robots.

‘One of the problems in football - and life in general just now - is responsibility. I look at the Ryder Cup. What saddened me about that was Phil Mickelson. There comes a time when players have got to take responsibility as well as the manager.

"When I was a player we’d always look within. “Are you doing it?” "That’s gone. When I saw that from Mickelson.... ultimately there is no self-responsibility. If eight players had performed at top level they could’ve won. It was a cop-out. I don’t like it.

‘What surprised me - looking at him - is that he would’ve come from an era of  hardship, it was more about the player and the individual. It’s incredible. That is society in general."
