I Was Speaking Generally - Coleman

Coventry City manager Chris Coleman has said that he was only speaking generally about off-loading fans favourites.

Many fans on the CT Forum and other message boards had jumped to the conclusion that this meant  that Aron Gunnarsson was on his way. However, this is not the case and the City manager said to the CT's Alan Poole: Message boards  “I’ve never read one in my life but sometimes my son looks at them and says ‘my God, dad, what’s all that about?’

“When I made those comments I was trying to speak in general terms rather than referring specifically to the upcoming transfer window. "I was saying that I would never be afraid to sell popular players – I’ve done it before and it wouldn’t make me lose any sleep if I had to do it again – but people shouldn’t attempt to read too much into that.

“In football you never know what’s round the corner. "We all know what happened with Scott Dann and Danny Fox and the fact is that if a big club decides they want to cherry-pick, Coventry City is in the same boat as anybody else.

"It’s the same with West Brom, Newcastle or anybody like that – if somebody comes in with enough money, that player’s gone.

“When that does happen we need to be pro-active, we’ve got to know who we’re bringing in in case somebody goes out.

"But we’re trying to build here and if we can add to our squad without anybody going out, all the better.

“People will be looking at players like Gunnarsson, Westwood and Best in this transfer window – Besty’s contract is almost up, Westie’s been linked with lots of clubs.

"I don’t know what might happen but I’m not sitting here trying to sell those players – I’m not trying to sell anybody.

“The only player we’ve said might be leaving is Elliott Ward; he came in and did a good job for us the other day but it’s on record that I think a change would be best for both parties.”
