Hosts Kick Off World Cup With A Win

Hosts Germany won the opening game of the 2006 World Cup with a 4-2 victory over Costa Rica. Phillip Lahm scored the opening goal for Jurgen Klinnsmen's side after only five minutes and nine seconds.

Former Manchester City and Malaga striker Paulo Wanchope scored to level the game in the 12th minute. Two goals from Klos made it three one to the hosts before Wanchope added another in the 73rd minute. With three minutes left, a stunning goals from Frings gave Germany a 4-2 victory.

In the second match of the tournament, there was dismay for Cov's Polish community when Poland were beaten 2-0 by Ecuador at Shalke's impressive stadium. Tenorio and former Southampton player Augustine Delgardo scored the goals.
The game was live on ItV and their panel featured three people with Coventry connections. Coventry born Gabv Logan,daughter of Terry Yorath hosted the show with former Sky Blues Stuart Pearce and Sam Allardyce as panelists.

Around 200 City fans are expected to be at England's game against Paraguay in Frankfurt tomorrow.
