Coventry City midfielder Aron Gunnarsson played for Iceland U21's against Denmark in a 3-1 EuroU21 Championship victory tonight.

Iceland did have a slim chance of getting into the semi-final stages but knew they had to beat the hosts Denmark in Aalborg and had Gunnarsson back in their team after he had missed the Switzerland defeat due to suspension.

Gunnarsson, whose contract at the Ricoh Arena expires on the last day of this month, played in front of the back four in a game which somehow was still goal-less after the opening forty five minutes.

Andersen made a brilliant one handed 21st minute save whilst Denmark at the other end had some good chances before Gunnarsson was booked in first half stoppage time.

Iceland had their coach sent to the stands before Andersen pulled off another cracking save in the 53rd minute.

Then the small band of Iceland fans were going mad when Sigthorsson bundled the ball home in the 58th minute and two minutes later, Siggurdsson crossed for Ben Bjarnason to head in.

Iceland were now third bottom in the table headed by Switzerland who were beating Belarus 2-0.

Kadri hit the bar only for Siggortsson to have a goal disallowed and then hit a post with twenty minutes remaining.

Denmark pulled a goal back through an 81st minute Kadri header. Gunnarsson who was now wearing the captains armband took a kick to his heel.

Then in stoppage time, Iceland's left back Valgardsson beat a couple of players before curling into the net to give Iceland a 3-1 win which unfortunately was not enough for them to go through.

Switzerland won their game against Belarus 3-0. Switzerland won the group with nine points and Belarus also went through thanks to their 2-0 win over Iceland after both them and Iceland had the same points and goal difference.
