Government Stalling On Safe Standing

With the likes of Coventry City joining those clubs who would support the introduction of safe standing areas in their stadiums, Richard Scudamore from the Premier League spoke to BBC Radio 5 Live about the prospect of supporters being able to get a choice as to whether they sit or stand at matches.

According to reports, Scudamore accepted that 'interest is growing from clubs and others but said there is no legislative appetite from the government' to move away from the current all seater regulations which were enforced, thanks to lobbying from seat manufacturers including PEL PLC which was owned by former Coventry City Chairman Mike McGinnity, and introduced following the Taylor Report into the Hillsborough Disaster.

Coventry City are hoping to have a safe standing area for City supporters only in their new stadium.
