The goal scored of Coventry City's first ever goal at Highfield Road has been traced.

Coventry City historian Lionel Bird tracked down that it was Mark Rideout's fourth-minute goal which gave City a 1-0 win over Shrewsbury Town in the opening game at Highfield Road back in 1899.

Speaking to the Coventry Telegraph's Simon Gilbert, Lionel Bird said:  “It has taken me a year to finally identify Mark Rideout as the scorer of that famous goal at Highfield Road.

“I am particularly grateful to Julian Pugh, the Worcester City historian, who provided the crucial photograph, and to his great grandson Colin Steventon and the rest of his family.

“Evidence suggests he commuted by rail to matches whilst playing for his various clubs.”
