The recent awful injury to the young Arsenal and Wales player Aron Ramsay rekindled memories for Manchester United and Wales winger Ryan Giggs of the career ending injury to Coventry City's David Busst.

Giggs told Wales Online, "I have seen something similar happen right in front of me, David Busst for Coventry City against United in 1996. It was a terrible sight, again it was very unfortunate."

"There was a pool of blood because the bone broke the skin and there was blood in the goalmouth that had to be cleared before the game restarted. It was just awful."

Giggs said he would consider coming out of international retirement to replace the young Arsenal player Ramsey, who suffered a horrendous injury against Stoke City recently.

David Busst's promising footballing career was ended by, not by the injury, but by subsequent infections suffered after several operations.

Busst had a total of 26 operations, but contracted MRSA and came close to having his leg amputated. He never played again and retired from the game following advice from his doctors on 6 November 1996 at the age of 29.

Busst is now Coventry City's director of their Football in the Community programme. He has also trained as a coach and earned several of the UEFA coaching badges.

He has managed non-league Evesham United and Solihull Borough. In addition to his work for Coventry City he helps with his brother Paul, as defensive cover for Highgate United who play in the Midlands Combination Premier Division.
