Gary's Gone (According to paper)

According to the CET, Gary McSheffrey has completed a £4m move to Birmingham City. Nothing has so far appeared on either club's official website, but the paper has an interview with Paul Fletcher who is quoted as saying: "It's been a very complicated situation and I'm disappointed it has dragged on and on. It's been four or five weeks now, and that causes discomfort for all concerned.

"Whether Gary stayed or went it would have been be a tough decision, but sometimes you have to make tough decisions. And that tough decision might have been to tell the player that he's staying.

"We had to evaluate all the various factors before us and decide what was best for Coventry City. We had to consider the views of the manager, the chairman, board members who are out of the country and, not least, the player himself.

"And in evaluating this offer we took the fans' view into account. I read what they have to say on a regular basis because it is important to us - they are the part-owners of this club."

"It's very difficult one for Gary. He's obviously got great affection for Coventry City, he's enjoyed his stay at the club and probably wanted it to continue.

"I sympathise with him because I was in exactly the same position. When I was 20 I was a big signing for a club 20 miles up the road (a recordbreaking £60,000 move from Bolton to Burnley in 1971), so I know exactly how he's feeling right now.

"He's been a very committed member of the football club and I hoped that could have continued. Things like this are unsettling for the player as well as the club. "He's been a great servant to the club and he was a valuable member of our squad. He's a Coventry lad, a lovely lad who we think the world of. We didn't just see him as just a pawn in all this - it's not like that at all."

"It wouldn't be fair to discuss the financial situation because the manager has a budget he has to stick within and keep all his players happy. "But there's no way the bank ordered us to do anything.

"It's no secret that the club has an overdraft, like 99 per cent of clubs up and down the country, but we operate within that. "We're not the type of football club that will go broke. We are slowly starting to climb the ladder and that won't be achieved by always doing exactly what the bank wants us to do.

"Whatever we did we knew we wouldn't make everybody happy - we understand that.

"But the important thing is that we stay focused on our plan to get Premiership football within three years. We need to take calculated decisions, brave decisions, and that's what we'll continue to do."

If the deal is completed, Covsupport wish Gary who was the first ever winner of the SBT Young Player Of The Year award in 1999 all the best.
