Former Coventry City midfielder Gary Deegan has signed a one year deal with Southend United.

The Irishman, has signed an initial one-year deal with the option of a second season, after spending time at Roots Hall on short term deals and told Southend's club website: “I'm really happy to get it over the line. I always wanted to stay here and the gaffer has echoed that back to me.

“It's important to be performing and playing in pre-season, which will set us up for a big year.

“We have brought in some good additions, which brings a bit of variety and a bit of chopping and changing. We're not looking to stay up, we just want to push on now.

“I don't think the gaffer really knew me, which was why I was handed short-term deals throughout last season, which is fair enough.

“I'm feeling good and looking forward to the new season. Both sides will be buzzing and you want to get of to a good start and get that first win as soon as possible. We know Fleetwood will be a tough test, and I'm sure they'll be saying the same about playing us.”
