Former Coventry City loanee Gary Gardner is out for eight to nine months.
The midfielder suffered an anterior cruciate ligament injury in Aston Villa U21's game against Stoke City on Wednesday.
Paul Lambert said to the Aston Villa club website: "It's a blow and it's definitely a blow for the lad but he's very positive and he'll get great attention all the way through his rehab."
