Free Kick Practice Works For Me - Best

Coventry City striker Leon Best has said that staying behind to practice free kicks has helped him.

It was a stunning free kick from the Republic Of Ireland international that sent City on their way to a 2-0 victory against Barnsley yesterday.

"I have taken it upon myself to stay out after normal training has finished, to practice on my free-kicks, set-plays, penalties and other things that I can improve on," said Best speaking to The Mirror.

"So I was pleased to get the opportunity to have a go. Our new signing Michael McIndoe, who has a great left foot, was keen to have a crack as well but I got the nod and I'm delighted at how it turned out.

"I hit it sweetly and, although it was a little central to goal, the power was there to take it past the goalkeeper.

"I've managed to score a few goals against Barnsley over the past couple of seasons, although I didn't really realise that until I was reading the match programme beforehand.

"I spotted my picture in there and the caption said something like I normally save my goals for games against Barnsley. I can remember getting a couple against them back at the Ricoh two seasons ago, and scoring at Oakwell last term, but this one may have topped the lot.

"I was pleased that I managed to hit it so well and, coming so early on in the match, it gave us the platform to go on and dominate for long periods.

"We looked dangerous going forward and were very good defensively. I thought Martin Crainie, another of our new signings, had a terrific game considering he had only met the lads the day before.

"He and Ben Turner marshalled the back four superbly and never gave the Barnsley strikers a sniff of a chance all day.

"We've won both our opening two matches now, which has given us a lot of confidence. There's a long way to go, of course, but the lads feel as if we can do pretty well this season."
