FIFA have slammed City for threatening Stern John by saying that his first team place may be in jeopardy if he joined up with Trinidad & Tobago for their World Cup Qualfiers. FIFA boss Sepp Blatter said that "it was unacceptable and that they would be writing to City and asking for fair play". Chelsea were also criticised over their treatment of Rumanian Adrian Mutu.

However, City hit back releasing a statement on their website saying:"
Coventry City has refuted claimed by FIFA President Sepp Blatter that the club has tried to prevent Stern John from going on international duty. Coventry City strongly denies these allegations.

Said Chief Executive Graham Hover:" Coventry City has a longstanding history of having international players on the books and we are proud of that fact. "We have always encouraged all of our players to perform for their country if selected and will continue to do so.

"Furthermore, we have a manager in Peter Reid who was himself an international player and who fully appreciates how proud you feel to play for your country.

"We suggest Mr Blatter checks his facts before issuing statements which are unsubstantiated, untrue and potentially damage the reputation of Coventry City Football Club."
