Iain Dowie has been saying that he is close to pulling off deals for three players all aged under 24. Said the City boss to the CT: "Iain and myself met with Paul Fletcher, Mal Brannigan and one or two others at the Ricoh where we had a long chat.

"We need to get some bodies in and we are not 100 per cent sure what our budget is or is going to be but the chaps were really confident that the investors will be in place by the end of the month and then hopefully cash made available. "But we are also keen to bring a few players in before then if we can and have got two or three players who are close to being done.

"One is definitely agreed and one is 95 per cent done and we hope there will be more news on those this week. "Robbie Simpson is more or less done and dusted.

"I was at the exit trials at Lilleshall recently and got talking to a scout there who is known as Mr Conference because he has known the division for 40 odd years and he believes Robbie is the best there has been in the division for a long, long time. "We have seen how Michael Kightly has done at Wolves after moving from Grays which shows players can make the step up.
"So it was a no-brainer as far as we were concerned.

"We had him watched two or three times towards the end of the season and were impressed because he is a real handful, he's brave and charges around and scores goals. "We have chatted with him and he is a bright lad who is doing a degree in maths and sports science at Loughborough and he seems very happy with things."
