Former Coventry City manager Iain Dowie has been linked with the Northern Ireland manger's role.

Nigel Worthington today announced that he is stepping down after tomorrow night's game with Italy.

He took over in 2007 but with Northern Ireland now unable to qualify for the 2012 European Championships in Poland and Ukraine, Worthington has decided to quit and told the BBC: "Up until three games ago we were in a good position and what happened was not anyone's fault.

"I feel the time is right to go after four-and-a-half years working with the Association (IFA) and the players, who have been outstanding.

"This is not because of any pressure from the Association or the supporters - it's just a football decision,"

Early speculation as to who will get the job sees former City boss Iain Dowie in the frame along with Jim Magilton and another former Sky Blue in Michael O'Neill who is currently managing Shamrock Rovers.
