Former Coventry City midfielder Gary Deegan suffered a broken jaw in an attack outside an Edinburgh nightclub on Sunday.
Deegan, now at Hibernian after making his position at Coventry City untenable, had left a night club in the Scottish capital at 3am, when he was confronted by a man who punched him before running away.
Deegan and his friends were found in nearby Rose Street and he was taken to hospital for treatment.
Police have appealed for witnesses to contact them.
