Scott Dann played the whole of Birmingham City's 4-3 penalty win over Brentford for whom Robbie Simpson was an 83rd minute substitute. Brentford led 1-0 through a 68th minute Wood goal but The Blues levelled through Phillips in stoppage time.
Other League Cup scores saw Leicester beaten 4-1 at home by West Brom, Man Utd beat Wolves 3-2 and Wigan beat Swansea 2-0.
