Dave Bennett Matchday Guest For City V Shrewsbury

Last updated : 28 August 2017 By CCFPA

CCFC set out on their 2017-18 bid to ‘March to the Arch’ in the Checkatrade Trophy next Tuesday night (ko. 19:45). The Sky Blues, as defending Trophy winners, take on Shrewsbury Town in the first match of the group stage (matches follow against Walsall (a) on October 3rd and WBA U21s (h) on November 7th). CCFPA committee member and 1987 F.A.Cup winning hero Dave Bennett will be our ‘special guest’ at this Tueday night’s game.

We can do no better than ensure ‘Benno’ is at the game as our ‘special’ since last season he seemed to become the Sky Blues’ own ‘Checkatrade Charm’ for cup games. He naturally watched every home tie all the way to the final and three times in that run joined us as ‘Special Guest’ at winning Checkatrade ties along the way. In that capacity he watched the Sky Blues 1-0 win over Crawley Town in December 2016, the 3-0 demolition of Brighton U23s in January and then the 2-1 Ricoh win over Wycombe Wanderers in front of Sky cameras at the Ricoh in the semis last February.  11,000 ecstatic fans (below) then knew they would be able to take the Wembley Way and a 40,000+ strong Sky Blue Armywent on to have a wonderful winning Wembley day out as the Sky Blues defeated Oxford United to take the Cup.16668040_10208292697096669_809794708_o

Last season Benno certainly had a way with cups as, back in August 2016, in the Sky Blues first home fixture of the season, he also saw a young Sky Blues side edge out Peterborough United 3-2 in the EFL Cup! The Sky Blues are already out of the renamed League (Carabao) Cup so we hope Dave can cast his magic of last season over this year’s Checkatrade campaign.

Why not join him on Tuesday night to see whether his retains his ‘charm’? He will be touring the supporters’ lounges in the main stand before the game in the company of club host (and CCFPA member) Brian ‘Harry’ Roberts. After the game he will be enjoying some friendly banter in front of Sky Blues fans with CCFPA’s Billy Bell from the stage of G-Casino’s Lady Gs under the Ricoh stands (hopefully discussing a win)!

If you really can’t get to the game you can always tune in to BBC CWR’s live matchday commentary of the game where Dave will be assisting with their analysis of the game as it unfolds. Let’s hope ‘Benno’ run of good luck with Sky Blues continues on Tuesday night!
