Micky Adams has said to Michael Doyle, Marcus Hall and any other members of his first team squad who are out of contract at the end of this season, that new deals have to be earned.

Midfielder Michael Doyle is one such players whose contract runs out in June. Speaking about him to the CET,the City boss said: "I would think and suggest that Michael Doyle has other offers but I can't do anything about that. "We allowed his contract to run without discussing an extension, and he has now, perhaps, got the upper hand.

"But what would he want to leave here for? Where would he go? People want to stay at this football club for all the right reasons now. I don't think they did before.

"If I was to look at the clubs that he could possibly join, I don't think there would be any better than what we have got.

"But if he does go then we have to shake hands and say 'thanks very much, we appreciate all you have done for us,' and then move on. "I am not going to be held to ransom by anybody. We have had that before but it won't happen at this club any more. We don't do that now."

The City boss who has already announced which reserve team players he is released added: "I am not ruling anything out with any of them. "They are playing well at the moment which is terrific. I am pleased with them all but they need that to continue so that we can finish as high as we can - and if we do that it obviously strengthens their case for a new deal.

"I wouldn't like to think I am the type of manager that really puts the wind up people's sails, but they are playing for their futures at the club - when they cross that white line they are playing for their families.

"That's the same at every club, and those decisions will be made in due course. "But the message is 'keep giving me performances and showing the public that you want to be part of the club. "I am not going to give contracts easily - they are going to have to be fought for."
