Coventry City manager has been talking to the Coventry Telegraph about who will be the new ‘City club captain. Coleman says he has his own ideas who he wants to appoint, but will wait until later today when the players return to pre season training at the Ryton training ground. Clinton Morrison will probably be the favourite as he has deputised last season in the absence of Scott Dann.

Coleman told the Coventry Telegraph, “I have got my ideas but I will wait until everyone gets back before I make up my mind as to who I would like to see captain the side. I did it like that last season and had a chat with Scott in the pre-season, and I will do the same again this year.”

The former club captain, Scott Dann, whose transfer to Birmingham City for around £3.5m, has led to the need to appoint a new captain has aroused Chris Coleman to question whether Dann is ready for Premiership football. Coleman said, “I said to Scott that he should have given it another year or two, but if you are good enough you are old enough”.

“It will be a baptism of fire for him because it is not an easy league but he has got the attitude and mentality to go on and learn quickly. But I would have liked to have seen him stay around for another couple of years in the Championship…. in terms of potential, I always thought he would end up in the Premier League. Is it too soon for him? Maybe, but we will see how he finishes up this season.”

Coleman also pondered, “It is a good argument for young players to stay and get another 50 or 100 games at this level and then go because sometimes you can get lost in the system and it is hard then to get back to where you were. Or, you stay where you are, play another 50 or more games and learn your trade a bit more. But who knows, Scott might go there and do really well, and he has certainly got the right mentality to do it. But the proof will be in the pudding.”
