Coleman Fumes Over Match Volume

Coventry City manager Chris Coleman is fuming over the amount of matches that City have to play this week.

Tomorrow night, the Sky Blues take on Hartlepool United in a League Cup tie and then travel to Barnsley on Saturday after already playing Ipswich Town on Sunday.

"It's barmy, absolutely ridiculous, that there are so many games packed into the first two weeks of the season," said Coleman to the CT.

"In fact it's dangerous; players are going to get injured because it's too taxing physically - you're asking too much of them so early in the year.

"I can't believe that we're being asked to play three games in seven days, especially at the pace you get in the Championship and the Carling Cup.

"There are other teams in the same position as us, without big squads, so it's crackers.

"It's a ludicrous situation that needs to be addressed but there's nothing we can do about it now so we've just got to get one with it."

Coleman has lost four players in Keiren Westwood, Leon Best (and injured), Aron Gunnarsson and Sammy Clingan because of the international fixtures and with Patrick van Aanholt not available as Chelsea don't want him cup-tied plus injuries to David Bell and Clinton Morrison who may make the bench, the City boss will not be able to field the sort of side he wanted to against the League One opposition.

The crowd for tomorrow's night's game which kicks off at 7.45pm is certainly to be affected. City has a good number of England fans, some of whom will be in Amsterdam for the friendly against Holland. That game is live on ITV1 or for those with Sky, you can see how Keiren Westwood gets on for the Republic Of Ireland.

The Football League have to take some of the responsibility for this as they arranged the date of the Carling Cup matches. It has been known for some time that this was an international midweek with some countries playing World Cup qualifiers and with the amount of international players throughout the Football League, the first round of the Carling Cup should have been played last week before the season started as has happened on previous occasions.
