Clayton's Gone

Clayton Ince has joined Walsall on a free transfer. The keeper signed from Crewe a year ago, became known as "Calamity Clayton " amongst some of the City support for his inability to catch the ball cleanly and was told by Micky Adams that he was free to find another club despite having a year left on his contract.

Having missed the Copa Ibiza due to not having a visa, Ince played in the friendlies in Ireland before getting injured in the tenth minute of the friendly at Rushden. He was back for the League Cup ties at Rushden and Palace but by now Stephen Bywater was playing well in goal having joined on loan from West Ham.

That loan ended prematurely and Ince played his one and only league appearance for the Sky Blues in a 2-1 defeat at Leicester,a game he was heavily criticised for. Marton Fulop was brought in and apart from a bit part in the Richard Shaw Testimonial,he never featured for the first team again.

He made his reserve team debut in the 1-0 home defeat to Portsmouth and played in games against Norwich,Chelsea,Charlton,Leicester, Southampton,Fulham and Arsenal as well as friendlies v Chesterfield and MK Dons.

Ince came out of retirement from international football just when it looked like Trinidad & Tobago were going to qualify for the World Cup and went to Germany but took no part in any of T&T's three games.

He started training with Walsall this week and signed yesterday for Richard Money who is quoted as saying: "His experience is going to be vital."
