Clarke- A Fantastic Win

Coventry City defender Nathan Clarke has said that the 2-1 victory over Gillingham which was City's first for 109 days and the first league victory under Russell Slade was a fantastic win.

Clarke, who played his part in a City defence which soaked up the pressure applied in the second half by Gillingham after a Max Emher goal had reduced the arrears of goals scored by Kwame Thomas and George Thomas, told BBC Coventry & Warwickshire: “It’s fantastic. Quite a lot of people are saying, ‘at last,’ and it’s just that because we’ve been close on a few occasions and not managed to get over the line.

“Mentally I think it’s a fantastic win today, for us to hang on when they piled it in the box again late on and we dealt with it very well.

In the first half we showed glimpses of what we can do,” said Clarke. “We’re a good side who scored two fantastic goals and probably could have had another one as well.

“We’re obviously delighted with the win but it’s only three points and we have got to keep grafting and going again.”
