City Start McGoldrick Talks

Coventry City have, according to Steve Waggott started talks to try and keep David McGoldrick.

McGoldrick, whose goals have not only set a club record away from home but have lifted the Sky Blues out of the relegation zone, is due back at Nottingham Forest on January 3rd.

Speaking to the Coventry Telegraph's Andy Turner, City's Development Officer Steve Waggott said: “It’s a huge month for the club, “We brought David in before Mark Robins arrived and he’s been very good for Coventry.

“His goal scoring record stands up and Mark has come out with some really interesting and on-the-money quotes about him finding his home here.

“He’s enjoying his football for the first time in a long time. He’s well liked at the club, the fans think a lot of him and he’s got a great arena to play in.

“We’re in League One for now but hopefully we’ll be moving up in the next year or two. To me, if you are a player you have to want to play for a manager who has the skills and acumen to make him a better player.

"And who better than Mark Robins for movement around the box and desire and everything. So all those points have to be factored in to the general discussion we’re having at the minute with his agent and Forest.

“You have to do the leg work and if you want the player you have to go the extra mile to get him. I’m still hopeful and as long as we’re talking I’m going to be optimistic.

“He knows we would love him to sign and possibly pen a two and a half year contract with us.

"And if for some reason, to be fair to him, we can put a release clause in there if we don’t hit the targets in terms of League status in a certain period of time, if someone comes in with a certain value for the player then we could say he can go.

"So we’ll be having on-going discussions and we’ll see how it pans out.”
