Stephen Hughes has hit back at those criticising him for some of his performances this season. Talking to the CET,the Sky Blues captain said: “A lot of people have said a lot of things about me recently but I had a disappointing pre-season when I was injured for most of that. “I have also had some injections in my back and got straight back in the team so I haven’t really had any time to do any training or anything.

“I know what I can do at this level. I believe in my own ability and I will show everyone what I can do. “Other people can say what they want. I will just get my head down and give my all in training and try to give my lot if I am picked in games.”

He admitted that he was not happy with being taken off at half-time of the defeat by Crystal Palace saying: “It was hugely disappointing to be taken off at half time and I guess it hurt my pride a little bit. “No footballer wants to come off at half time. The manager obviously had his own reasons for that. He has said a little bit about it this week but that is his decision and if he doesn’t think I am right to play in certain games then that is his decision.

“Obviously I am professional and will take it on the chin and just get my head down and keep working hard. I will train properly and if selected I will try to give 100 per cent in games.

“I was back in the team again at Ipswich and I enjoyed the game but we will have to wait to see what happens on Sunday, if I play. But I am hanging in there and I will just train hard and see if I can carry that through into games.”
