City Old Boy Scores In World Cup For England

Former Coventry City youngster Danny Sturridge, who said he would be happy to score just once in a World Cup Finals, realised that when he scored for England in their World Cup Group D Match against Italy.

Sturridge, who was lured away from City's Academy in 2003, was watched by a good number of City supporters who had made it to Manaus in the Amazon rain forest. and they and those in a crowd of 39,800 saw the Liverpool player equalise for England from a Rooney cross, some eighty two seconds after Claudio Marchisio had given the Italians a 35th minute lead.

Former Coventry City loanee Jordan Henderson also started and played his part in England going in 1-1 at the break. 

 

Italy were back in front when Mario Balotelli headed in, five minutes into the second half.

Jordan Henderson was replaced in the 73rd minute and Sturridge limped off six minutes later but there were no more goals and England started their World Cup 2014 campaign with a defeat.
