City Ladies Through To League Cup Second Round

Coventry City Ladies are through to the Second Round of the WPL League Cup after a 0-0 draw at Cardiff City.

At the Cardiff International Stadium, the Sky Blues went into the game knowing that after their 2-1 wins against Sporting Club Albion and Aston Villa, a point would be good enough to see them progress from their League Cup Group 7 into the second round.

Coventry defender Emma Hollingsworth had the first strike on goal and forced Nokes to save well, diving to her left.

In a half of few chances, it was Paul Cudby's side who went closest when Emily Simpkins sent a ball over, which was headed down and over the keeper by Leanne McKenna but unfortunately was cleared off line.

Paul Cudby brought on Katy Male at the break but lost the dependable Leanne McKenna who came off in some distress with a knee injury and had to be replaced by Nicole Dale, who came on to make a great steal and run before squaring for Jade Formaston to fire wide from twelve yards.

One of City's long distance players in Kerry Bartlett, who comes from Gloucester, lobbed just over before Lloyd flashed wide at the other end.

City went straight back up the other end and a great free kick from the touchline by Simpkins was tipped over by Nokes at full stretch, leading to a succession of corners.

Long standing centre half Natasha Lynch broke down the right wing and launched a shot at goal from tight angle which was only inches wide of far post as the Sky Blues got the point they needed to see them through.

City: Morgan, Goulding (Male), Lynch, McKenna (Dale), Simpkins, Hollingsworth, Formaston, Barber, Bartlett, Saulter (Farrow), Durrant. Subs: Wood, Sweeetman-Kirk.
