City Ladies Have A Point To Prove

Courtney Sweetman-Kirk believes that Coventry City Ladies will ‘’have a point to prove’’ ahead of their final game of the season against Portsmouth on Sunday.

The Sky Blues could record their highest ever finish in their 22-year history, should they avoid a heavy defeat this weekend, but this honour would be tinged with the disappointment of being refused a license to join the FA Women’s Super League earlier in the season.

‘’We will approach the game to go out on a high for sure,’’ Coventry’s leading scorer said. ‘’I think with being refused a license to the FA Women’s Super League, we all feel like we have a point to prove. We want to finish with the best points tally possible and personally I’d like to bag another goal or two to add to my goal tally.’’

Should Coventry draw, they would stay in fifth position in the league, whilst victory would take them above Manchester City and into fourth, to cap a successful, yet ‘’strange’’ season for the striker, who has netted 18 times in all competitions.

‘’Personally I've enjoyed the campaign and my performances, but it’s been a strange one. With the postponements and lack of consistent games, as well as the change of manager and disappointment of been refused the license, but overall I'm happy and proud of what we have achieved.

‘’I think we can look back and say it has been a good season and as always the team morale has been top notch throughout.’’

Despite Portsmouth picking up just one league win in 2013, manager Chris Holloway will not be taking anything for granted this weekend, and will resist the temptation to experiment with his squad for the game at the DCS Stadium.

‘’We will be giving it our all to get three points,’’ the Sky Blues boss stated. ‘’ We struggled against Sporting Club Albion after a two-week break, but we played well against Leeds United and Aston Villa so hopefully we can take that into the Portsmouth game. There are no easy games in this league and Portsmouth will be no different. They will be coming off the back of a close game against Leeds, so I am sure they will arrive after a long journey here, to finish with a win.’’

The fixture will take place at the DCS Stadium, home of Stratford Town Football Club, and will kick off at 2pm.
