Last updated : 23 December 2016 By CNS Sport

Coventry City FC have issued the following statement following the pitch invasions during the defeat to Sheffield United.

The statement reads: ''Coventry City are a family club and it is therefore of utmost importance that supporters, of any age, feel safe in their matchday experience at the Ricoh Arena.

On Thursday 15th December, a number of people illegally gained entry to the field of play and forced the match to be temporarily suspended.

The nature of this behaviour was unlawful and as such will not be tolerated by the Club.

Coventry City FC alongside the EFL and FA, have launched a full and thorough investigation of the incident. Appropriate action will be taken against those individuals involved.

Those found to have participated in the pitch invasion will be issued with a banning order. The Club would like to make it clear that we operate a zero tolerance policy for this type of behaviour.''
