City Goalkeeping Quandry

Coventry City have an issue in the goalkeeping department.

Second choice keeper Lee Burge has a shoulder injury and requires an operation which could keep him out for the rest of the season.

City have U21's keeper Corey Addai on standby and speaking to the Coventry Telegraph's Andy Turner about the goalkeeping situation, City boss Tony Mowbray said:

“We have issues with the goalkeepers,” admitted Mowbray.

“Lee Burge is going to have an operation on his shoulder this week which leaves us a huge issue because Reice has a tear in his shoulder so really we don’t have a fully fit goalie.

“We’re in a scenario where I don’t really want to go for a loan because that takes another outfield player out of the team and I can’t have a loan goalie on the bench and not playing. So we’ll probably go with Corey on the bench at the moment.

“I am wrapping Reice up in cotton wool. He’s only training once or twice a week and playing on a Saturday because he needs to rest his shoulder and hopefully we’ll keep getting performances like we did at Port Vale. It obviously didn’t hinder him there.

“There are a couple of free agents around but the problem for me is that to bring in a 37 or 38-year-old goalkeeper you have to pay them to sit on your bench and do nothing, and we haven’t got any money. So why would I do that when I have got Corey?

“If Reice were to get injured in a game or get sent off then he’d have to go on for the remainder of that game and then it’s easy to go and get a goalkeeper.

“Corey is not a professional yet and doesn’t have to be counted as your next goalie so we’d have no keeper and you can go and get an emergency loan keeper at any time of the season.

“So we’d go to the Premier League and probably get a No.3 who will still be a top goalkeeper, knowing that he’s coming to play, not sit on the bench.

“But at the moment we can’t go and ask to take one of their goalies who is on perhaps 12 grand a week and say we can only pay a thousand and oh, by the way, he’s not going to play because he’ll be on the bench behind a 21-year-old. They’d think we were mad.

“But if Reice becomes injured we would be phoning them up to tell them he’s coming to play in the next game and the goalie jumps at the chance because they all want to play.

“Let’s hope we can go 15 games without having to call on the sub goalie. But knowing sod’s law the moment Burge goes off and has his operation will be the day Reice gets sent off or gets smashed by someone and injured."
