Padraig Amond, put Newport ahead in the 40th minute with Mickey Demetriou converting a 44th minue penalty.
Shortly after the second half got underway, Jimmy Smith pulled a goal back for Crawley Town in front of a bumper 5,741 crowd which was mainly due to those wanting tickets for Newport's FA Cup tie with Tottenham.
