CCFPA Sign Up Jonathan Gould

Last updated : 10 August 2015 By CCFPA

The Coventry City Former Players Association is delighted to announce that our latest signing is former Sky Blues goalkeeper Jonathan Gould.

Then CCFPA Membership Sec Mike Young had initially contacted Jonathan well over a year ago in New Zealand where he had moved in the latest stage of his career. Jonathan said he would be honoured to join CCFPA and was as good as his word now that he has returned home again.

Mike was on hand to complete the formalities when Jonathan attended the Ricoh for the first time to watch the Sky Blues first League One game of the 2015-16 season when they took on and defeated 2-0 well fancied Wigan Athletic with a brace from new forward Adam Armstrong.

Jonathan, who was pleased to compare notes with fellow shotstopper Andy Marshall who was our special guest for the day, appeared 27 times for the Sky Blues between December 1992 and May 1996. He came to Highfield Road from West Brom later in the same year they had signed him from Halifax Town where he first made his professional mark. After leaving us Jonathan went to Bradford City (where he had previously been on loan from us).

Spells at Gillingham and Glasgow Celtic (1997) followed where he not only gained Scottish international caps but also championship medals and honours in both Scottish and League Cups. In 2003 he moved to Preston and totted up 59 appearances also being loaned out to Hereford United. A brief sojourn with Bristol City was ended when ‘Bobby’s Boy’ moved to New Zealand managing Hawkes Bay United (2006) and coaching with Wellington Phoenix (2009) and Perth Glory. In February 2015 Jonathan returned to the UK to take up a position as goalkeeping coach to West Bromwich Albion.

Jonathan’s arrival creates a unique configuration of membership for the Association as we now have three Gould’s ‘on the books’. Jonathan’s dad, the legendary ‘Cov kid’, former Sky Blues player (1962-66) and two time manager (1983-83 & 1992-93), Bobby Gould  has been a long time Association member as has Bobby’s brother Trevor Gould who played for the Sky Blues between 1966-70.
