Greg Abbott, himself a former City player, faces stiff opposition from the Triinidad & Tobago international's former club Port Vale but is confident that he can take Birchall to Cumbria.
Birchall was told last season that he did not fit into the plans of Chris Coleman and has been allowed to look for another club.
